THE MEASLY VIRUS
The Measly Virus is my big debut! I decided to write this book because I was saddened and concerned to hear about young children falling critically ill and families living in anguish because of outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. Being thankful for my two healthy daughters, I felt an obligation to contribute to the pro-vaccination cause in some way and am hoping to achieve this by raising awareness of the importance of immunisation to our younger generations in an enjoyable and fun way.
So how does one go about promoting vaccines to small children in a fun way? By creating a virus monster of course!! A cheeky, crafty, cantankerous mini-monster that is trying to ensnare everyone he comes across and make them sick... throw in a clever and brave young girl, a magical medicine called a vaccine, and some mighty superhero powers... wrap it all up together with some rhyme and lively illustrations (thanks to Laura Watson) and there you have it - The Measly Virus.
This book is dedicated in memory to Riley Hughes, a four-week-old baby who tragically died from Pertussis (Whooping Cough) on March 17th 2015 in Perth, Western Australia. Riley was too young to be immunised against this terrible disease - he, like so many others, was vulnerable and relied on herd immunity to protect him.
To read more about his story please see the Light for Riley Facebook page and check out the inside back cover of The Measly Virus. Part-proceeds from every book sale will be donated in memory of Riley to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation to support the Hughes family's vision to eradicate Pertussis from Australia.
